FAQ's About UK Global Business Mobility Visa

What is the UK Global Business Mobility (GBM) visa?

The UK GBM visa is a set of work routes that allow overseas companies to send key employees to the UK to establish, manage, or support their UK operations, including expansion workers, senior or specialist staff, graduate trainees, service suppliers, and secondees.

Employees of an overseas business with a trading presence outside the UK can apply if they are coming to work for a linked UK entity that holds a valid GBM sponsor licence and issues them a Certificate of Sponsorship.

The five GBM routes are: Senior or Specialist Worker, UK Expansion Worker, Graduate Trainee, Service Supplier, and Secondment Worker. Each route serves a different purpose, from setting up a new UK branch to sending specialists on short-term assignments.

Most GBM routes do not directly lead to settlement, but holders can sometimes switch inside the UK to other categories, such as the Skilled Worker visa, which can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain if all requirements are met.

You must usually be paid at least the general GBM salary threshold or the “going rate” for your role (whichever is higher); for many senior or specialist roles, guidance indicates a high minimum salary band, and in some cases those earning £73,900 or more are exempt from the 12-month overseas service requirement.

The permitted stay depends on the specific route and your immigration history, but there are overall caps (for example, 5 years in a 6-year period in some GBM routes, or 2–3 years for certain assignments). Extensions may be possible up to the maximum allowed for your route.

Standard UK work visa processing from outside the UK is typically several weeks once biometrics and documents are submitted, and applicants in the UAE can often pay for priority or super-priority services through the VFS application centres for a faster decision.

Yes, eligible partners and dependent children can usually apply to accompany or join a GBM main applicant, provided they meet the relationship, maintenance, and documentation requirements set out in the rules.

The GBM routes are mainly for temporary business assignments and intra-group transfers linked to an overseas business, whereas the Skilled Worker route is aimed at longer-term employment with a UK employer and can lead directly to settlement after a qualifying period.

No—under the UK Expansion Worker route, your overseas company can send a senior employee to set up a new UK branch even if it has not yet started trading in the UK, provided you meet the sponsor licence and eligibility criteria.
